OT in Mainstream Media

A common tendency in many cultures is for elders to desire to stay within their home as they age and not relocate to a new environment, this is referred to as aging in place.  When researching aging in place and occupational therapy within mainstream media, I found that in order for a senior citizen to remain in their home as they age they may need help from an occupational therapist.  From an occupational therapy standpoint, many older adults may begin to lose stability or balance as they age so an occupational therapist would be able to add adaptive equipment to their home in order to help secure their stability and prevent falls.  Also, many seniors tend to be recovering from injuries, surgeries, diseases, and other medical problems that cause their family to relocate them to nursing homes or assisted living.  This is where an occupational therapist can come in and offer solutions to attempt to keep the senior in their home by showing them new and adaptive ways of performing simple skills for indepenent everyday life.  In the article, the author discusses seniors in a people first mentality meaning that they look at the senior as the person they are verses their diagnosis or disability.  This creates a trusting and caring environment with the client or reader.
