Universal Design

After watching the Ted Talk about universal design, I began to think about all of the common activities that would be difficult for someone with a disability of any kind to partake in.  One thing I began to think about was how deaf people watch movies in a movie theater and how I had seen a video before of a deaf man discussing the frustration of how the movie theater accommodates for deaf individuals. The discussion was about how sometimes the glasses or box they must obtain to see the captioning for the movie.  Also, thinking about how even at the Paralympics the city as a whole would need to make sure to have entrances and ways for people with various disabilities to get around.  When thinking about universal design, it would greatly benefit the world to have a common way to communicate for the deaf (not just American Sign Language or another way to sign a native language) but allowing there to be a known way of signing so people are able to better communicate. Another example would be how why can't the norm be to have the captions on the screen of a movie theater for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Also, before watching this Ted Talk I was not aware of universal design, so learning that it was about making things accessible and usable to all people was interesting.  This is something everyone should look into whether it means adding assistive technology to everyday items or allowing people with a specific need to have accommodations.

  1. I too saw the Facebook video about the man talking about how movies don't have captions and how frustrating that is to the deaf community. Your interpretation on a universal design is a great way to improve this issue. Great job!
