Neuro Note 1: SCI
I chose to watch Pétur K. Guðmundsson's Ted Talk titled "A Brighter Future in Spinal Cord Injury Treatment". I chose to listen to this Ted Talk because I wanted to hear what a person who has experienced an accident that caused them to get an SCI has experienced during their treatment. Peter discussed his adventurous life before his accident and how a simple walk in the woods resulted in his SCI. Peter has an SCI at the level of T12 and it is complete, he was told he would nerve walk again. Peter used the prediction of the doctor to fuel his treatment. He has been researching many new technology and treatments to increase people's chances of recovery. It was interesting to hear about his various types of interventions he has taken part in and is helping to create. One interesting aspect he addressed was his mental health at the neurological level, and how he sought out help but professionals couldn't offer solutions. This gave a great example of how giving a patient no hope can be influential to their rehabilitation whether that be negative or positive. Also, he discussed how significant it is to understand that a person needs to get standing and walking as soon as possible.
