Driving and Community Mobility

What were the key takeaway points from the guest lecture today? Describe two occupational therapy interventions based on the topic. Each intervention should address a different type of client: individual (1:1), group, or population.

Our guest lecture on driving and community mobility discussed the process of assessing clients vision to determine their capability to drive.  The occupational therapists have the client do a two-part evaluation; a clinical evaluation and a behind the wheel evaluation.  There are 3 purposes for these evaluations, 1) to assess individuals for safety and potential 2) evaluate persons with physical disabilities for appropriate adaptive equipment and 3) train individuals in the use of adaptive equipment and/or compensation techniques for driving.  These evaluations determine the drivers capability to shift attention from one task to another and be able to correct point of sequence in the task.

One intervention that can be done is educating a client with left neglect to turn their head to check the left side as a compensatory technique.  This would be beneficial to practice with a client who suffers from left neglect in order to make them a safer driver.  A second intervention that could be beneficial is teaching a client to use their new adaptive equipment in the car. A steering wheel knob is beneficial to a client who had decreases range of motion in their upper extremities.  This would allow them to have better manipulation of the steering wheel.
